In the past few months I’ve had an uneasy feeling using Movable Type. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Because of my uneasiness I’ve been trying open source CMS’s like crazy trying to find the one that would give me the kind of tools and control that MT did but without the price tag I was afraid would eventually come with MT. And now this week my uneasiness was realized in the new price structure for MT version 3.

A few months ago I tried WordPress again and was pleasantly surprised by the improvements that had come to this GPL’d blogging CMS. I had earlier been disappointed by it but it seemed to have improved greatly in just a few months from my first spin around the block. I was so impressed I moved this site to it from MT and I have not been disappointed. I’ve been extremely pleased with it’s ease of installation and it’s speed is impressive also (which for me is important over the dial-up I must use here in the North Country of northern lower Michigan.) The ease with which I moved my MT entries was also impressive.

One of the biggest reasons I wanted a GPL’d CMS was because I was concerned that someday MT would have a pricing structure that made it too costly for the churches and individuals I’d setup with MT to continue to use it. Plus I wanted something to recommend to small businesses on a tight budget that I wanted give point and click site maintenance. I don’t have a problem paying for software but what the good folks at SixApart have done is price MT far out of my league and those I assist.

Well, I can say I’m happy I went looking and even more pleased I found WordPress. My displeasure is going to be switching over the several sites I’ve setup for the earlier mentioned churches and individuals, as I see no point in staying with the older MT system that will see no future improvements. And I, like many, need to become familiar with one system and need to be proficient with it if I’m to install and maintain the number of sites I assist with.

It will be a long process making the switch but I’ll not be looking back.
